Department of Physiology

Department of Physiology is situated at the first Floor of the main Building of Triveni Devi Bhalotia College. The department was established in 1980 and the academic sessions on B.Sc. Physiology General Courses commenced from 1981-82. B.Sc. Physiology Honours Courses started from session 2008-09. At the beginning, there were only five part time teachers in the department. and then it was led by the senior teachers. Dr. G P Das joined the department in the year 1982 followed by Dr. Arabinda Pathak. Honours course was introduced with the permission of Educational Directorate in the year 2008. Mr. Arunabha Bandyopadhyay joined the department in the year 2010 and is now the only full-time faculty of the department along with two State Aided College Teachers, Dr. Bhakti Laha and Mr. Kalyan Banerjee. Rich departmental library, three laboratory and different major instruments are available to students of the department.
The Core facilities are supported by the department and institution which supports the seven major core labs:
•Biochemistry (Qualitative analysis of major biomolecules using colorimetry, quantitative analysis of different body fluids collected from veterinary hospitals)
•Hematology (Total and Differential count of Blood cells, Hemoglobin estimation, ESR detection)
•Histiology (Light microscopy and simple staining methods are used to analyze and identify different visceral organs, blood cells; sample collected from veterinary hospitals)
•Experimental Physiology (Kymographic recordings of the mechanical movements of several visceral organs and observation of different factors)
•Nutritional Assessment (Child nutritional assessment through ICDS data, individual nutritional assessment through one day and 7days diet chart recall method)
•Human experimental lab (Anthropometric measurements are carried out with anthropometric rod, weighing machine, measuring tape for ergonomic designing of several tools, blood pressure measurements, Pneumographic recordings are carried out for calculating Physical Fitness)
•Environmental Physiology (Measurements of different Environmental factors, viz., light, sound, temperature, humidity, etc. for analysis of human work environment and occupational hazards)
Major equipment for modern research includes Colorimeter, Digital weighing balance, Hot Air Oven, Incubator, Centrifuge, pH meter, Microtome, Light Microscope, Tissue bath, Hemocytometer, Anthropometric Rod, Weighing Machine, Skin-fold Calipers, Lux meter, Sound Level Meter, Kymograph, Dale’s Apparatus, Digital Spirometer, Metronome, Sphygmomanometer (Manual), Hygrometer, Hemoglobinometer, ECG Machine, Peak Flow meter, Wet bulb-dry bulb Thermometer, Wintrobe tube with ESR stand, Pneumograph
Students use to get engaged in different extra-curricular activities like Career counseling through departmental seminars, Publication of Departmental Wall magazine, Departmental Chart preparation, Educational Excursion and social interactions for nutritional assessment and diet survey, Industrial visits and Ergonomic analysis of Work environments, Visit to different social work places and analysis of Work environments, Diet chart preparation and ECG analysis, Studying of scientific literature and review submission, Institutional visit and demonstration of different research tools, machines and workflow, and Project report writing and submissions.
